Thing 18 Wikipedia

Wikipedia must be one of the most helpful things to come out of web 2.0. A search in google often pulls up a wikipedia reference which tends to be pretty helpful, although like most things on the web you might search for a second reference.

It is a great way of sharing information- without having to be the editor of a book, you can insert references to whatever topic you find interesing and which others will find useful. Best of all, you don't have to pay to get the information you need. Which is obviously not so good news for those previously publishing the information or libraries where people would come and read up on stuff. However for a serious, involved course of study, copying it all from wikipedia would be a bit obvious, so hopefully the academic libraries still have a role to play.
